MERV-13 vs. HEPA vs. Electronic Air Cleaners: What Actually Works in Smoke Season

For most Walla Walla Valley homes, a MERV-13 media filter in a proper filter cabinet is the best smoke-season value — meaningful fine-particle capture with the blower you already own. Whole-home HEPA captures the most but requires a dedicated bypass unit at the highest cost. Electronic air cleaners sit between: strong fine-particle capture and washable cells, if you'll actually maintain them. The wrong answer is a builder-grade fiberglass filter — it protects the furnace, not your lungs.

The best filter is the highest-capture one your blower can actually breathe through — capture ratings mean nothing if the airflow collapses.

Why can't I just buy the highest MERV number at the hardware store?

Because a filter is a restriction, and your blower was sized for a certain amount of it. A high-MERV filter crammed into a 1-inch slot can drop airflow enough to overheat a furnace or freeze an AC coil — we see it every year. The fix that actually works is a media cabinet: the 4-to-5-inch version of the same rating has several times the surface area, so it captures more while breathing easier. That retrofit is a standard job for our IAQ team.

Which one should my house get?

Honest defaults, in order: if you have a standard system and smoke season is your concern, price the MERV-13 media cabinet first. If someone in the house has asthma or serious respiratory needs, that's when the HEPA bypass conversation earns its cost. If you hate buying filters and will genuinely wash cells twice a year, an electronic air cleaner is worth a look. Is a MERV-13 filter good enough for wildfire smoke?

For most valley homes, a properly fitted MERV-13 media filter is the best value during smoke season — it captures a meaningful share of the fine particles that make up smoke, using the blower you already own. The caveat is airflow: MERV-13 in a thick media cabinet breathes well, but forcing a high-MERV 1-inch filter into a system not built for it can starve airflow and cause the short-cycling problems it was meant to prevent.

Do I need a true HEPA filter in my HVAC system?

Rarely. True HEPA is the gold standard for capture, but it's too restrictive to sit in a standard residential duct system — installing it properly requires a dedicated bypass unit, which is why whole-home HEPA is the most expensive option. It earns its cost for households with serious respiratory needs; for typical smoke-season protection, well-fitted media filtration usually gets you most of the benefit for far less.

Are electronic air cleaners worth it?

They can be — they capture very fine particles with little airflow penalty, and their cells are washable instead of disposable. The honest trade-offs: the cells must actually be washed on schedule to keep working, and some older designs can produce trace ozone, which is worth asking about before you buy. We'll tell you whether one fits your system or whether media filtration is the smarter spend.

Why does the smoke get through my standard fiberglass filter?

Because that filter was never designed for smoke. Builder-grade fiberglass filters exist mainly to keep large dust and lint out of the equipment — wildfire smoke is dominated by particles far finer than they meaningfully capture. During smoke season a fiberglass filter protects your furnace, not your lungs.

Can I just use portable air purifiers instead of upgrading the HVAC filter?

For one or two rooms, yes — a good portable HEPA unit works well in the space it serves. For the whole house, the math flips: a duct-mounted filter or air cleaner treats every room your ducts reach using the blower you already own, with one filter to maintain instead of several.
